I visited a friend who works in a wonderful “end-of-the-garden-purpose-built-office” the other day and was truly shocked at the stacks of papers, books, files, DVDs, stationery and projects littered on floor, shelves and every possible space. If you work alone maybe you can put up with that kind of disorganised office, but in an office with larger numbers of workers it could never work.
Any business should have clearly defined roles, from secretarial support to IT, Managing Directors to Accountants. As far as the latter goes, there are many online or high street payroll companies that can be engaged to pay all staff accurately and on time, leaving the firm free to concentrate on running their growing business. With ever changing legislation, VAT payments, data entry, validation, processing and payslip production, life can get very complicated in the Accounting Department!
If you’re responsible for the management of others, it’s important to know what motivates your team. Always explain to the team what their goals and aims should be for the month, week or even day and ask for their input. Your staff should be given the space to expand on their natural talents; after all you employed them for a reason. Try to give fair and reasonable feedback to them on the work they’ve completed and get to understand the different personalities that are combing to make up your working team.
You might consider offering a cash incentive to the team for completing work in a particular time span, or maybe organise some kind of simple “Get together” in order to help them bond and feel rewarded. At the end of the day a simple “Thank you” is always good!
